I'm new to Illustrator so there may be an obvious answer to this question, but I've been unable to figure it out. I've created a graphic in Illustrator and want to save it without the background. In other words when I export the image as a .ai file to Flash it has a white square background. Same thing if I save it as a .jpg. Is there anyway to save it without a background or a transarent background?

There shouldn't be a white background in the ai file, unless you specify one. The jpg file will, though, because it doesn't support transparency. Is it a photo, or artwork created entirely in Illustrator? If it's a photo, the white background will be coming from that. Otherwise, try saving as an eps (File > Save As), or a SWF file (File > Export > Macromedia Flash).
