Transparency in applets

Is there any way to stop the silver bg appearing ubder an applet, other than inserting it as invisible, and then showing it?

Also, is transparency possible with an applet? Does not apear so, pity wmode PARAM does nothing - this is a shame if it is not possible, because it looks very ugly.

any ideas?
