When I put the 2 components in the transparency window - the object I wish to fade with the gradient, and the gradient - a new layer pallet appears (opacity layer...??), and all my other layers disappear.

Goodness knows where they went to! So I had to cancel the operation to get me layers back...

Anyone know what happened??

Many thanks

Bert

I worked it out... you need to click on the object box in the transparency window!

Thanks for looking

...yes bert, when using illustrator opacity masks, the two thumbnails in the transparency window allow you to switch between artwork layers and the actual opacity mask...

...as well as native illustrator elements (like gradients, text and vector shapes), you can also use imported bitmap images as opacity masks...
