I'm creating a huge document that will be output as a pdf and burned onto CDs. I have used drop shadows on my master page, so the page icons have that little checked pattern indicating transparency. The black type comes out kind of thick.

Can I get rid of this transparency? If so, how? It's annoying.

You get rid of transparency by not using it.

There might be a FAQ here that addresses fat type over transparency.

I looked at the FAQ. The only thing it said was to put the type on another layer, which i did -- still looks fat to me.

I can't seem to remove the transparency because I created drop shadows.

Go back to Drop Shadow (Command+Option M for Mac) and uncheck the Drop Shadow box.
And to get better results your image layer should be the bottom layer and text layer at the top.
