Hi,

Are translog backups "tied to" the last FULL backup?

That is let's say I take:

FULL BACKUP 6/18/08 12:01 AM
TRANS BACKUP 6/18/08 12:15 AM

FULL BACKUP 6/18/08 7:00 AM
TRANS BACKUP 6/18/08 7:15 AM

Can I apply the TRANS BACKUP @ 12:15 AM to the FULL BACKUP @ 7:00 AM?

My understanding is that you CANNOT... but someone told me unless you truncate the log, you can do them out of sequence like this. That does not make sense to me.

Thanks

No you can not do this.

Backing up the log truncates it by default.

You could take the 12:01am full, then restore the two log backups.

But if you restore the 7am full you can only restore log backups taken after that.

There would be no reason to restore log backups from before 7am as those changes would already be in the database.
