Hello freinds,

This may sound Naive. But still find it convenient as far as I am concerned. Well we have 3 overseas located offices where we are trying to migrate all the databases from whatever existing ( MySQl / Access) to SQL server. Now we get databases send across from those sites to us as mail attachments with which then we generate our monthly reports etc etc.

Now once they migrate to SQl server , I am wondering asto whats the best way to get the databases from those sites to our site so that we can generate monthly reports as before.

Any opinions or any suggestion is welcome.

(1)Well we could always get the mdf and ldf files mailed across to us and then update the local copy of there database that way. Size etc will then be a constraint.

(2)What about a backup and restore operation , Is it a workable solution for this.

(3)What about replication (our site being a subscriber and the remote site being a publisher)

Any ideas and suggestions are most welcome.

Rgds

These will all work.
Backup / restore will give a small file than the detach/attach so is probably better.

Replication needs a connection and can be an administrative pain - you could look into sending differential backups though.

If it's just the data look at bcp - zip - send - unzip - bulk insert. May well be the fastest.

Cursors are useful if you don't know sql.
DTS can be used in a similar way.
