For backup purposes I need to transfer around 5 GB of data at a time (once per week). I want it to be secure (sensitive information) and would like it to be free (if possible). I was going to do this via FTP, but the files are sent in clear text. I don't know much about SSL but can you get free certificates? If you use SSL certs does that mean that the entire transaction is secure?

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks,

J

Are you copying it within your environment, or across the Internet?

I wouldn't recommend FTP either, as it can be a bandwidth hog.

Across the Internet. Basically I want to backup the system state and data backups to off-site storage (cheaply ;-) ). I simply want to copy this data weekly to a server at my house.

Why dont you just put it on dvds and sneakernet it to your house. Cost you about 50 cents a week and save you about 36 hours of bandwidth usage.

The company is in Florida and I'm in North Carolina...so it would cost a little more than 50 cents a week.

Well thats a good reason why you dont put it on dvd. i still dont think uploading it offsite is a good idea either, depending on bandwidth it could take a considerable about of time to upload 5gig of data.

I'd agree. Unless you're doing log shipping, doing backups across the 'net is a bad idea.

Onsite backups that are shipped offsite is a better solution.

Yeah, I just didn't want them to have to do any work on this. I'd prefer just to start this on Friday night and let it run until Monday morning if necessary. I'll figure something out.
