Transferring applications from one one hdd to another

Hi,

This happens a lot where I work when a person is getting a refresh(new system) or there system hdd is crashing(showing signs of failing and I need to know if there is a way to transferred these images across without having to install them via cd but straight from the old hdd itself.
 
I used Ghost to make a backup of the disk to a server folder, using the network and then to restore them also using the command line ;-) all this done from a boot floppy...
