Take a look at Microsoft's website article Q199878.
This will explain it pretty well. Adduser is pretty easy to use but you want to be careful when using the switches. You certainly don't want to delete information. I don't think it will keep the existing passwords though. You might need to have the users re-enter them when they first logon.
