I need to transfer files and outlook express email and address book from an xp machine to an imac with osx v.10.4 tiger. Will a cross-over cable work? Or I could do it with a flash drive I suspect.

I need to know the steps to view folders on my flashdrive on the imac. Can anyone spell it out for me. Exactly what I click on to see those folders. I'm comfortable with xp but this imac stuff is all new to me......

Just wanted to add: nowhere can I find 'storage' or 'macintosh hd' or anything similar. I don't know if it's hidden or burried in a menu or called something else.....

I can't help you with the MAC... but transfer should work with a crossover cable, if you set it up correctly, ergo place both machines on the same IP range, ie. 192.168.0.10 (xp) and the MAC as 192.168.0.20 (MAC) with a Subnet Mask of 255.255.255.0 ...

but as you mentioned it, a USB STICK or even a DATA DVD may be easier...

you can setup a file share between the two systems, but you'll need to configure both the PC and the MAC.

On the mac. you'll need to allow the PC users access to the Mac's "Windows shared files" and enable the windows file sharing service. To do this:

Select the "Apple" menu (the icon at the top left of screen) and click the "System Preferences" menu item.
select the "View" menu at the top of the screen and select "Accounts".
On the new window that appears select the user who will be making their files available on this machine and then select "Edit User".
Check the "Allow user to log in from Windows" checkbox and click "Save".

To enable the windows file sharing service:

Select the "Apple" menu and click the "System Preferences" menu item. Select the "view" menu at the top of the screen and select "Sharing".
In the "Services" tab of the "Sharing" window select the option "Windows File Sharing".

On the PC:

ensure file and print sharing is installed.
create a share to share the files with.

You may still need to turn off simple file shareing though.

To do that, open explorer, tools, folder options. Click the veiw tab and scroll to the bottom. There you'll see the check box for simple file sharing.

Then, a crossover cable will work.

yeah.. it's a pin, but should take too long

Hope this helps

Good Luck!

USB Flash Drives

These itty-bitty devices can fit in the palm of your hand, but can pack upwards of a gigabyte or more of data on them. Also known as USB thumb drives, these storage devices are handy for shuttling files from computer to computer. And they're incredibly simple to use: Just plug one in to any USB port on your Mac and the device should show up on your Desktop as a mounted volume icon.

USB flash drives, including the iPod shuffle, appear on your
Desktop as a mounted volume once you plug it in.

To copy files onto it, just drag and drop files, folders, or applications onto the icon. Or open the volume by double-clicking it to better organize its contents (you can add a folder by pressing Command-Shift-N). When you're done, drag the icon to the Trash (it turns into an Eject icon) to unmount the drive, and then unplug it.

Is than not easier than fiddling around with netpowrks and crosswover cables etc...

OK....thanks for all the help so far. I figured out how to look at files and folders on the imac. And my flash drive shows up. I'll give the file transfer a shot later today....

Good luck with the flash drive. My linux boxes read my flsh drive just fine so i don't think a mac will have any issue with it.

Earlier in the post the idea of networking the two computers with a crossover cable was mentioned. If both conmputers were windows you would not need to assign IP addresses. Both would automaticly assign themselves IP addresses in the APIPA address range (169. something, I don't really remember the exact range). i do not know if the imac has any kind of APIPA functionality. The first time I transfered files between pcs with a crossover cable like this I didn't realize I had forgot to set IP addresses until after I had moved the files.

I haven't gone back yet. I was reading that I need 3rd party software to move his Outlook Express address book. The file has to be converted into something the mac can use. All I could find was 'Move2Mac'. The reviews are mixed on it. I told him to go to Microcenter and see what they suggest....
