I bought a 200GB WD hard drive to replace my full 60GB secondary hard drive. Is there a painless way of transferring my data to the new one? All tips appreciated!

Thanks in advance

What OS? And, do you just want to add the "old" programs, or "clone" (make an exact copy - along with the OS) the old drive to the new drive?

I am runnin Windows XP home edition. This is not for my master HD. I want to transfer my movie files and mp3's that I have saved on my secondary HD to my new 200GB drive that I bought to replace it.

I hope I am making myself clear lol.

Thanks!

Simple - install 60gig as a slave (change jumper). You can just leave it and access it as a second drive, or use the XP built in "Transfer Wizard" to copy what you want to the master drive. You can then use the old drive in another computer, or format it and use it for system backups of your computer (I prefer Ghost images). When you start getting into the larger drives, you will want a weekly, or at least monthly image backup). I usually (when upgrading to a larger drive), leave the old drive alone (put it on the shelf) for a couple of months, in case you remember something you SHOULD have copied!

i am not making myself clear lol.

Ok I have a 40gb Master with my OS on it(drive C:). That is staying.

I have a secondary 60gb hard drive(drive e:) already installed as a slave.

I purchased a new 200gb and want to install it in place of the 60gb(drive e:) and transfer the data(mostly mp3s,videos) from the 60gb to the new slave drive.

So basically i wanna swap slaves drives and transfer the data.

Leaving the master hard drive alone.

thanks for your help micker i really appreciate it!

Did the new hard drive come with a "utility disk? If not, go to the WD website and download it. It should be able to copy everything from 60 to 200. Put the 200 in place of a CD Rom if necessary. Copy everything and put the 200 in place of the 60, and you're all set. Again, what OS? you may need to do a BIOS update to recognize the full 200gig.

ok i can put it in place of a cd rom! thats what i needed to know. Sweet thanks Micker! I am running Windows XP Home Edition.
