We have a database server runing SQL 2000 sp4. When I check the system today, there is only 10% free space left. I want to do some clean up jobs and to make more room for the server.

From MSSQL -> BACKUP, there a lot of .trn log files, dated in in Feb. of 2007. Can I delete them?

We do backup our real database every night with .BAK and they are dated every day. But we don't have transaction log backedup every day. will this be a problem?

Besides transaction logs, is there anything else that I can delete.

I would put those .trn files to tape then delete them. Do you have maint plans running. Check the LOG directory you may have a lot of log files that maint plans create. you can delete those.

How do you do your backups? If you are using maintenance plans, you should check the plan to see if you have allowed it to delete old backup files.

thanks. I will check the log file and the maintenace plans later.

transaction logs keeps all your transactions for a period of time AFTER a full backup, and is used in conjunction with your full backup to restore your database.

if you have a full backup, then the only logs you need are the ones which have been taken after the full backup.

just to be safe, you may consider keeping 2 days worth of transaction logs, however generally, 1 days worth of logs is enough...
