transaction log shrinking of own accord

I was just wondering why our transacton log seems to shrink a little every now and again even though "autoshrink" and "truncate log on checkpoint" options are off

SQL Server 7.0

Are you backing up the Transaction Log?

Backing up the transaction log will cause it to shrink. It just doesn't happen right away.

It gets backup up at the middle of the night yes, but it seems to gradually grow throughout the day and then shrink a little bit, not all the way, at intervals of a couple of hours, and then carry on growing.
