My company is going to pay for me to learn Visual Basic 6.0 and Crystal Reports.... will this be a good thing for me.

It really depends on what you want to do. A free education is never a bad thing. VB and VBA are used by many of the standards software packages such as Office, AutoCAD, ... The basics are easy to learn and understand. Also, the VB forums on this site seem to be quite popular, indicating that it is a highly used language.

That's my two cent!

NEVER turn down free education! You've got a chance to learn a couple of very widely used business tools. Opens up a whole new world to you.

If everything seems to be going well: you don't have enough information.......

If you have some decent knowledge of computers and are willing to learn then go for it. If you are a "novice" then you may find it too much for you and it could be detrimental.

I was thinking. There are 3 of us going. But my concern is this. They are lookn to send us to a 3-5 day workshop on VB 6.0. The other two guys know some programming.

Will I be up to snuff in 3-5 days with these guys. We're talkn about us doing a major conversation.....

If you understand the concepts and are going there to learn then you will be fine. If you are going there thinking that the others are going to run rings around you with their superior knowledge, then you will get problems.

Open minds learn quicker. Go for it.

Call the training vendor and ask to speak to the instructor. Explain your knowledge level and that of your co-workers and get the instructor's opinion. Training comes at all levels. It may be a beginner course or the instructor may have ideas on how you might prepare yourself for it. At the very least I would suggest you drop by a bookstore and look at a VB6 book and see if it makes any sense to you/if you have any interest/apptitude.

Programming is a great field if you have ability and interest, but it's an awful mess if someone gets involved who doesn't have either. Imagine if companies just sent people for nurse's training if they thought they needed a nurse! There is WAY WAY more to programming than learning a programming tool or language.
