How are you able to track a broadcasted message from a node on a network run by NT server 4.0?

By mac address. You can capture all traffic and then apply the filter or you can make acustom filter using the mac address to any for starters. It's fairly easy to do and very useful. this way you get ALL broadcasts even if it's not IP bsaed :)

When you capture it all, sometimes you can glean other info from the packets. Of course, if the sniffer is limited in disk space, you will want to filter on the capture side first.
