Hi All!

I have a site that sends out newsletters etc and I was wondering if there was a way to track if a sent email has been opened. Can I do this by putting some code in the email or something like that?

Thanks!!

You can track click through rate pretty easily by applying unique querystring values to the links in your email.

To get an open rate, you need to record the number of emails you sent. Then you embed an image in the email that is hosted on your site (that is not ever used for anything else), and track the number of times it is requested. It sounds simple, but there are all sorts of pitfalls to be aware of (people who receive emails as text-only for example).

Have a look at this:

Hope this helps,

Alex

btw if you want to track whether individuals opened their emails clearly this won't work, unless you want to host a unique image file for each email sent out. Sorry for assuming you'd want this information in aggregate if it is not the case.
