While a tech was working on a laptop he noticed that the wifi card detected, and connected to, a wireless network. In our environment this is FORBIDDEN. However, we have a lot of consultants in and out of this building and I wouldn't put it past them to have set up their own WAP.

How do I track this down? I need to be able to find the router and smash it.

Depends how you want to play it...

Using a laptop you will be connecting to their network, so they could see you in the same way that you can see them. This might give the game away if they're up to something dodgy, so they could pull the plug on it before you get to put your 12lb sledgehammer into action. For this method a small directional aerial attached to a PCMCIA card might enable you to direction find their AP. Take several bearings from around the building, and hopefully they'll point you in roughly the right direction.

If, however, you want to detect by stealth, then try one of these products:-

I use the earlier WFS-1 model. It's not directional as such, but the signal strength indicator should help you when you walk about throughout the building.

Good luck!

Net Stumbler or Cisco AeroSpace(?) will show but not connect. That would be my 1st step ..... sniff the wireless - Then worry about direction
