Hi all, I just began using Visio and I am using the 2005 enterprise architects version. It seems to have a lot of bugs but its forward engineering ability is nice. My question is there a way to track changes between updates? For example I have a db that I modify on the server that I keep a current model in Visio for documentation purposes when I update it generates a nice log that has info like.

“ Pnt_RatingType
Column 'testchange' was added to the table.”

Does Visio have a way of keeping track of this info?

mercwrought,

Well again, ou are someone with a newer version. I will assume that they are similar.

Is this what you are seeking or is this what you have?

If it is what you are seeking, then "Yes" Visio can be kept current. Using ODBC to link to your DB. Basically, you areate a block to contain the information and create the link to your DB fields you want.

If you are looking to auto generate a "new" block for each new entry, this can possibly be done through some VB scripting. Someone else might post for this is you provide additional information as to what, specifcally, you want to accomplish.

After some digging it appears that the version is 2003 for enterprise architects, Microsoft just relabeled it to 2005. I know how to keep my model up-to-date with updating from the server. The problem is that I want to track changes made every time I update it. Does Visio have a system that keeps track of the changes, like a log file within Visio?

Visio does not have a feature to log changes, you will have to create your own.

As for the naming convention, VEA 2003 (Visio for Entrpirse Architects) was released before Visio 2003 was released. The 2003 refers to EA not to the version of Visio, so VEA 2003 contains Visio 2002. VEA 2005 was recently released and contains the latest version, Visio 2003.
