tracing a picture

hello! . i have just started learning to use illustrator (today) . and i wish to trace around a picture but when i go to file - place and select a picture i am told there is insufficient memory to complete the opperation. I have tried this with different pictures and different canvas sizes. Does anyone know how i can get a background picture so i can draw round it?

ok well.. it was a pc and i dont know how much RAM

it was a library computer in a university and i think the problem was to do with how much ram was allocated to illustrator.

I tried doing the same thing on another computer (in a different library) and everything is working now..
i also discovered the magic of the pen tool so iv just about done what i need to do.
