Hi

Am getting to grips with TracerT, but I am not quite sure how to debug the 3 columns that have the times in...

I have found sites that explain Tracert, but I can't seem to determine what the speeds are meant to be in column 2, 3 and 4 respectively.. (3 ms columns what are they the times of?)

example below.

1 1 ms 2 ms 2 ms madserv.madsci.net
2 38 ms 20 ms 19 ms vibegate.madsci.net
3 18 ms 19 ms 19 ms 10.163.253.1
4 26 ms 29 ms 30 ms ruby-f2-1-0.nbnet.nb.ca
5 29 ms 29 ms 28 ms bxuni-atm1-0.stjohn.canet.ca
6 50 ms 49 ms 49 ms bx2blm-atm1-0.montreal.canet.ca
7 81 ms 78 ms 80 ms bordercore3-hssi0-0-
8 66 ms 80 ms 78 ms core4.WestOrange.mci.net
9 85 ms 89 ms 89 ms somerouter.sprintlink.net
10 76 ms 69 ms 69 ms sl-bb11-pen-1-2.sprintlink.net
11 162 ms 140 ms 139 ms sl-bb11-pen-3-0.sprintlink.net
12 146 ms 149 ms 149 ms sl-gw4-sea-0-0-0.sprintlink.net
13 135 ms 139 ms 139 ms sl-televar-1--T3.sprintlink.net
14 127 ms 140 ms 140 ms sea-core1-f500.lightrealm.net
15 142 ms 149 ms 139 ms

I'm a bit confused by what you're asking -- each line shows the hop number, the ping time in milliseconds for 3 attempts, then the host or IP.

Basically traceroute just pings each hop and then moves on to the next one and pings that one.

Does that help?

Aaah I think you have answered it, its the ping time for 3 attempts, I didn't know it pinged the same thing 3 times.... I thought it maybe something more complicated than that!!

I feel a bit thick now!
