Hi all,

I have a red hat server with applications that where created for this server.
I need to trace this applications to understand what they do and what files they touch.

Any idea?

Thanks in advance.

There's a utility called [tt]strace[/tt] that will show all of the system calls a program makes, including calls to open files.

While this does give you system calls, it doesn't really give you what the program is doing. For that you will need to run the program in debug, but if you don't have the source, it will be close to impossible to really determine what the program is doing, unless it's a pretty simple program.

There's also a utility called [tt]ldd[/tt] that will list the run time libraries that a program is trying to open when it runs.
