this is from another forum I go to this is what I wrote there

"OK I Formatted my main 30 gig HDD and got Win 98 running on it, before I format i placed all the files I wanted on my other 80 gig HDD,

Now Im trying to upgrade to Win XP, everytime I try to upgrade I get an error and it cant install, Then i try to do a "New Installation" restarts my computer like its supposed to and checks my system and then it says starting Windows on the bottom then freezes or gives my a Blue screen that tells me of an error, so I cant go any further

Ive tried reinstalling 98 over the 98 thats on it now, hoping it would fix any damaged files, that didnt work.......

NOw that puts you up to date to where i am now

SO heres my question If I take out my 30 gig HDD and install XP on my 80 will it over write all the files I put on there to save?
or will it, put XP on it and save the files
and
when I put my 30 gig back in with 98 on it what will happen?

thanks in advance"

Ok when i Upgrade to Win Xp it gets to in the middle of analyzing my computer, and it gives my an error called "3E6H" and says the installation can not continue

when I Try to do a "new installation" it analyzes my computer and reboots, it checks my computer configuration and says starting windows, and most of the times it turns in to a blue screen that once said somthing about: Classpnp.sys, another time it said something about BAD_POOL_CALLER and another time said PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA,

then at the bottom it says:

***STOP: OxOOOOOOC2 (OxOOOOOOOO7, OxOOOOOCD4, OxOOOOOOOO, Ox81B766DO)
(--O=0-- my bad)

another time it said

***STOP: 0x0000007E (0x0000005, 0x8018340F, 0xF9E85268, 0xF9E84FC8)

I assume it probably changes every time

One thing WinXP will stumble on is creating/formatting a FAT32 drive of more than 32GB, has to go with NTFS. And of course Win98 can't see/work with NTFS. Sometimes WinXP will work with >32GB drives in FAT32 if they are formatted with Win98 first.

Here are some options for you. Anything to do with the Format command will mean loss of data on the partition you are formatting. Make sure you have backups of any valuable data.

HOW TO: Install Windows XP
The information in this article applies to:
Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
Microsoft Windows XP Professional

IN THIS TASK
SUMMARY
Upgrading to Windows XP
Installing to a New Hard Disk
Installing to a New Folder ****
Multi-Booting

You can also convert the file system to NTFS witout formatting the drive After you get XP installed on one hard drive. I would
suggest you back up all your important files to your 80gig drive, then let XP format your 30gig hard drive using NTFS tehn convert you other drive to NTFS. Noe having said this if you want to keep 98 then this of course won't work for you. "The beauty of the second amendment is, that it will not be needed until they try to take it." - Thomas Jefferson
