Not long ago, my dad gave me a really nice laptop. It's much faster than the machine I use at work, so I brought it to the office and asked my boss if he could get it setup to use there. He knew my modeling software was way slow on my office issued machine, so he talked to IT and they set up my machine for use at the office. All good.

This weekend, I wanted to start learning about networking, so I took my laptop home and began noodling around. Well, I figured out how to get the two setup. Under control panel, system, computer name, change I changed from "Domain" to "Workgroup" and entered in the workgroup name of my desktop. It worked and my two machines could see each other!

BUT, as soon as I rebooted my laptop, the laptop did the following:

1. made a new user, set as guest.
2. locked me out of my old user name.
3. hid all the desktop files for my old user name.

Fortunately, my dad's old admin account was still set up, so I could access all my files and what not by using "search". But when I try to use ctrl panel, system, computer name, change to change back from "Workgroup" to "domain" it says something like "can't find <domain name> service". Do I have to be hooked up to my office network for that to work? Or did I screw something up really good? How can I revert back to my old setup?

Yep, you need to be hooked up to the network at work, and worse, you probably need the netword admin to do it for you.
