My computer makes some beeps at startup, the fans are running and the lights are flashing as usual. But my screen is all black. The monitor is working correctly and I know it is not booting all the way because the windows start sound is not heard. I don't know where to start. I can't access the BIOS or go to safe mode (because I don't see anything). I opened the computer and checked that no cards or RAMs had hopped out.

I don't know if this is relevant but yesterday I was installing a game which asked for two .dll-files. I downloaded them from direct connect and put them in the windows\system directory. The game (and everything else) then worked. Then (non-)startup I'm doing now is the first after that.

Any pointers are much appreciated.

could it be my graphic card is broken? is this what would happend then? is there anyway to check this without having another graphic card?

Could be the graphics card but not necessarily. I've also seen this when the IDE cable was plugged in upside down into a device and even when a network card got dusty ?????. If it is emitting a certaion number of beeps then it is probably a code from the motherboard. Try the motherboard manufacturers website, see if it explains the code.

I had this problem when i put together my last computer, and it was a memory conflict. If all else fails, try using older memory to gain access into your bios.

Thanks for the tips, guys. The beep code was indeed for no video card. Also, I managed to get a hold of another computer afterall and switched the cards. It seems mine was broken. Anyway, thank you for the help.

You can also check if your power cable is plugged in correctly to your monitor and to your power circuit. Also check if your power cable is fine. How many video cards do you have on your M/B??
