Using CR 8.5:
This may be simple but it is not.
I have detail that are somtimes repetive and somtimes not. What I need is to summarize the detail into one line. So what I am trying to do is how to get total (Running Total) based on group footer. Please advice

Thank you.

Try posting some sample data and expected results, your description is vague.

You can keep track of just about anything by using variables.

Initialize a variable in the report header

Increment this variable at the group footer based on whatever criteria.

Display the variable in the page footer.

There are many posts here with specifics.

Ok this is what I am trying to do:
I am trying to get total of group within group.
Group #1, is grouped by customer
Group #1a, is grouped by customer+item

Customer (Group #1)
Detail: item1, pick ticket#1, date, order qty,Ship_qty1
Detail: item1, pick ticket#2, date, order qty,ship_qty2
---- ----------- ---
Group (#1a): item1, (Blank) , date, order qty, (sum 1+2)

Detail2: item2, pick ticket#3, date, order qty2,Ship_qty3
Detail2: item2, pick ticket#4, date, order qty2,ship_qty4
---- ----------- ---
Group (#1a): item2, (blank) , date, order qty2, (sum 3+4)

Footer (Group #1)
Customer: # lines=2, , , order_qty+order_qty2, (sum 1+2+3+4)

Thank you

So you're trying to get a count of Group 2 per Group 1? (I guess you mean Group 2, rather than Group 1a, as Group 1 and 1a would have to be the same group.)

To obtain a count of Group 2 per Group 1, insert a summary on the field in Group 2, select count as the operation, and reset on change of Group 1.

I may have oversimplified your problem, as I'm aware of your opening gambit. If I've misunderstood what you want, by all means - educate me.
