I am looking for an answer to two questions
I have worked on a Toshiba DK Strata 424 with internal modem and statagy internal voicemail. Both had cables going to a PC used for Administration. The customer moved the PC and I have to extended the cables---I am being told that both the Vmail and the Modem use special cables. Null Modem cables????

Since the modem IN was an RJ25 and the PC in was a DB9 and the vmail cable was DB9 to DB9----I am not sure what to think---I tried looking in the manual but the only reference I can find is "Use a special Toshiba serial cable"

Any Ideas?

Do you still have the original cables? If so, you should be able to purchase "extension" cables that plug into the original ones. Straight-through male-to-female cables should work since the original cables are already "special".

No I don't---I spliced new cable into them since they were being extended another 40 feet (RJ45 to mod plug) and the ends I had to cut off before I moved them as I figured they were just straight through cables---anyway---I believe it has to do with the DB9 and the way the pairs land on it.

Thanks

Do you still have the cut off ends? Use a meter to find which color wire is going to which pin and do the same for the end that's still there and you'll have your pin-outs to make the new cables.

you can buy a nul modem adapter at radio shack.. rj 25 male to rj 25 female.. same is true of db-9

1 to remote 1
2 to remote 3
3 to remote 2
4 to remote 20
5 to remote 20 (also)
6
7 loop back to 8
8 loop back to 7
20 to remote 4 and 5

it's been 20 years since i hand soldered one.. but that pin out used to be in the dos help screen.. before windows.. if you have any nortel customers, nortel send dozens of extra with a large system.. they will have a chrome (plastic) cover, most are marked.. null modem... that cable allows to dce or two dte devices to talk...

rolling the blue/blue white with the blue did not work. It was a 6 pin connector--could it use one of the outside pins for communication?
