I have a Toshiba laptop approx 4 years old and need to run a low level scan disk on it. Unfortunately I have no OS installed. Can anyone recommend a suitable piece of software I could use?

I am at the stage where I have just run FDISK and removed the partitions and it is getting stuck at 7% when I am trying to Format the drive.

Would appreciate any help please.

As far as I know chkdsk is also on a windows98 boot disk.
Boot up with the same boot disk you ran fdisk from. At the prompt type chkdsk

Running "chkdsk" will only check the disk you specify. Just "chkdsk" will check "A:". To run it on the hard drive, you will have to tell it to "chkdsk C:". You don't have a "C:" until you format it. Catch 22!
After you removed the partitions, what size partitions did you give it, and did you make it "active"?
