My Compaq armada m700 series laptop has recently died on me. The hdd (a toshiba hdd2153 in a compaq housing) is removeable and i believe it works still. Is it possible to hook this up to another pc via some sort of cable so that I can access it? Help - what cable will I need? Where do I get this from?

You can get an adapter to connect to a standard IDE cable to run as a slave in a desktop (usually as IDE 2 - master). You could also put it in a USB/Firewire external case. You want to use the Toshiba bare drive, without the Compaq "caddy". What OS? If Win 98, you may even be able to boot with it!

mikey2shoes,

I had a similar situation with a laptop that died. I picked up an external USB 2.0 enclosure from CompUSA for under $20 (six months ago, might be less expensive now) and was able to access all data.

As micker377 pointed out, you can also purchase a 2.5" to 3.5" drive converter and plug it into a standard IDE cable in a desktop machine. From what I've seen, these run under $10.
