Can anyone tell me some basic ways to help make a website rank well, I only really have basic knowledge as things have changed so much (I used meta tags, I've been told they are pretty redundant now?)

I know about PPC, but I've heard of something call contextual marketing, plus other stuff, which I know zero about. I'd just like some quick ideas, or links to more in depth information on the more inexpensive (or free) ways of helping a site get traffic to it.

Thanks.

The very, very first thing you need to do is define "rank well" better.
For instance, it would probably be easy to get a top spot based on the search term "foamcow cricket bat" but difficult to get a top spot on something like "house for sale".

So, what search terms are you aiming for?

Then, before resorting to PPC, PFI or any other kind of "Paid For..." enterprise, build a damn good website packed with relevant and useful content.

Once you have that done, seek out some good directories and respected sites that are also relevant to your site and see if you can get an incmoming link from them.

Then analyse how well things are working.

Cheers for that, it's as a suspected, content is king :D

It gets a bit difficult when you have a client with NO content, trying to explain to them why their website needs more to it. I always start out saying, ok you need these pages PLUS lots of good content.

I shall endevour to find some content which isn't a repeat of 30 other websites, I'm trying to promote a non-profit organisation, and as yet, it doesn't even make it into the top 5 pages of Google, so there is plenty of room for improvement.

Thanks again.

Meta are pretty much redundant for ranking, but still should be used they may or may not add some relevancy.

MSN and Yahoo you need a few inbound links and good content, Google still weights anchor text relatively highly so for rankings on anything moderately competitive more backlinks are needed.
