Hi we have a solaris v880 runing version 8
# uname -a
SunOS eurfinunx001 5.8 Generic_108528-29 sun4u sparc SUNW,Sun-Fire-880

Top shows iowait in high 90's. This server is connectet to eva5000 hp san and also has internal disks.

I have looked at iostat -xtn, to see which mount's are producing wait. Can anyone help me further as to finding the root of the problem.

How about the output of vxstat -vdg fin -i 5 -c 3 at a time when the system is busy?

The iostat output doesn't show a hell of a lot of I/O, does it? I think network traffic can also drive up %iowait... are you seeing a lot of that? Try running netstat -i 5 for a while, or monitoring the netstat -k <interface_name> counters periodically, specifically rbytes64 and wbytes64 (if I recall their names correctly).

4000 packets/sec coming in and 8000 packets per second going out consistently... that's a fair bit of network traffic! Any idea what it is?

Also they're not on ge0 judging by those 0 counters, do you know which NIC they're going through? Try doing a netstat -k <nicname> a couple of times with 5 seconds or so in between and see how much the byte counters are rising.

I actually need the second sample of data from the vxstat output (the first set which you posted are the counters since they were previously reset, the subsequent ones are for the 5 second sample intervals).

Well, network is virtually idle now, disks are definitely idle... no idea! What do your DBAs say, is the DB performing okay? If not, what are its primary waits?
