Hi All,

I would like to know with web pages, how does search engines recognise your web content. Is it done through some Keyword/s field on your web page? If this is the case what is the syntax/tag that is used for this?

Also what I really would like to know is how to make your web page be at the top of the list in a search engine like Google?? Is there a way of making this happen?? And can you tell where your Page will come on a search engine??

Any information would be great or any direction in this would help greatly

Regards
Anthony

Meta keywords tags are dead, don't spend any time on them.

If there was a single trick to do this, everyone would be using it. Have relevant content and get good quality links pointing to your site.

Most of all, keep the visitors happy, don't try to design the site for a search engine, otherwise you will not keep the visitors once they arrive.

Hope this helps

Getting top ranking is easy - just produce the best site for that particular subject! There's no way you can trick search engines into giving you consistently high rankings if you don't deserve them. You can, however, get artificially low rankings if you use things that engines find difficult to index - like Javascript navigation for instance.

See forum828 for discussion of how to optimise your site for search engines.

One viable alternative to gain top rankings on Google is to pay for targeted placement. You'll be guaranteed top ranking on search pages relevant to your site. Such success will not come cheap however *grin*

Hi
Good search engines will not charge you to get your site listed. Google is the biggest search engine and does not charge to get your site listed in its results. Yahoo and AOL search engines both use the SAME Google results and as such you do not need to pay to get listed with these search engines. Search engines that require payment do not represent true results as many important sites with relavent content are not even included.

Good results are never guarenteed - however the 'maximise' your chances of getting good results in a search engine like Google you need to ensure the following is in place:

- The content of your website is full of keywords that relate to the products/ services you offer, and try if possible to place the more important keywords to the top left corner of each page, with slightly bigger font size.

- Ensure the content of your website is 'to the point' and does not include information that is irrelavant to what you actually offer on your website.

- This is the most important: ensure you have a large number of websites linking to you. These sites must have something in common to your site, i.e they may offer a similar product, or information related to what you sell etc. Hyperlinks must be on these other sites that link TO your site. To set these up, contact these other sites and offer a reciprocal link back to their site. You are therefore also doing them a favour, so if they ask you to pay to get your site listed on their page forget it..find sites that will do it for free, as many will. To find out how many other sites currently link TO your site type in the following in Google:
"links:[www.yoursite.com]"

- The title and Metatag keywords (although not as important as they used to be) still play an important part - primarily the TITLE of your web pages and the DESCRIPTION TAG. The keywords play a smaller part. HOWEVER it is vital the title and description include the SAME keywords that appear in the content of your web page, and if possible in the same order.

I hope all the above helps. Results are never guarenteed, and lots of other things influence results.

aljubicic,

Generally speaking, we all try to be very helpful here. However, your question has been asked here more times than I care to count. In the future, please try to search for your topic of interest before posting a question. If you had done that, you would have seen MANY threads already dedicated to this topic!

Okay, now that I've gotten that off my mind, here is some good advice from Google regarding how to build a "spider friendly" web site:
