That website is nasty with pop up ads and drop down info bars!

I prefer to not use programs to block adds etc.., but instead if I ever visit a website that uses such nasty, underhanded, diabolical web coding practices, I will never, ever visit their site again nor would I ever purchase anything from such a site.

Having those blockers means you never get to see the nasty sites you should never visit or spend more than a millisecond on!

Plus those plugins are for firefox and I don't like firefox!

on some sites, that is one millisecond too long (drive-by infections)...

nope, AdblockPlus also works with Chrome, where as NoScript is FireFox only... but there are others that work with IE, Opera, or (urgh) Safari...

How to ask a question, when posting them to a professional forum.
Only ask questions with yes/no answers if you want "yes" or "no"

What can a website do as a drive by that doesn't require user acceptance of something?

Is there some exploit in JS / Browsers that allow arbitary code to be downloaded and executed on your PC?

I thought all browsers ran in a sandbox that doesn't allow access to the local machine what so ever, which is part of the browser specification, not even Javascript can get access to the local machine?

Is this not the case?

AdBlock when I went to the site told me I was using an incompatible browser, and I need to install firefox?

Here is the exact quote
It appears that your browser is not supported by Adblock Plus. Please install the latest Firefox browser first.
If it works in other browsers then their webmaster needs sacking!

Unfortunately, yes. Fortunately, if you have your browser, Adobe products, Java, etc. up to date, the known vulnerabilities will be caught. [small]Fingers crossed[/small]

Another problem is that even well-known websites can be hacked and set up with "land-mines" but this kind of discussion is better suited for Forum760 than here, IMHO.

According to the system requirements of AdBlock:

Google Chrome

Google Chrome 16
Google Chrome 17
Google Chrome 18

and if you are using one of them, and still getting the "Failure" message, then yes, I totally agree that the programmer needs to be sacked... ;-)

@2ffat,

>> the known vulnerabilities

That is the key word... ;-)

Any website that tells you to install a particular browser when it is actually compatible with others but doesn't tell you that nor provide a list of the compatible browsers, is a dodgy, underhanded, despicable site that should never be visited.

But that is just my bias and intollerant attitude YMMV ;-)

I'd like to second 2ffat's suggestion that a discussion on browsers, pop-ups, malware, and the like be better handled in forum760.

As far as the words of the year, numbers six and eight are new to me, but only number six will be retained. I'm not interesting in number eight, nor any other texting word.
