A very strange and frustrating problem indeed. Have a Windows XP Pro machine, and Pagemaker 7, everything was working great and then all of a sudden everytime you open Pagemaker the tool boxes, i.e. Style Sheet boxes, Color boxes, Tools box have gray lines running through them and you can't use them. I have uninstalled Pagemaker 7 and reinstalled, no luck. Then I went so far as to uninstall every Adobe program on the PC like Adobe Acrobat, Pagemaker 7 again, Photoshop, no luck again after I reinstalled Pagemaker 7 only, same thing. This is a Compaq Evo 510, with a 64mb NVidia GeForce vidieo card, 512mb ram, I mean what gives I can not figure it out and I have work to do and this makes it impossible.
If anyone has any ideas or suggestions, please help I am beyond frustration and really don't want to wipe and rebuild this system to solve this problem.

Re-create the PageMaker preferences file.
PageMaker stores information for plug-ins, features, and the application itself in its preferences file, Adobe PageMaker 7.0P Prefs. When you re-create the preference files, PageMaker restores settings to their defaults.

To re-create the PageMaker preferences file:
1. Quit PageMaker.
2. Rename the Adobe PageMaker 7.0P Prefs file in the System Folder/Preferences folder.
3. Start PageMaker. PageMaker re-creates the preferences file.

Also, you might want to delete all temp files (disk cleanup), scan disk and defrag.

When in doubt, deny all terms and defnitions.
