I would like to know if anyone has ever heard of a FoxPro application not running on a workstation because there is too much memory? I just purchased brand new Dell workstations for my users and my IT staff is telling me that the memory in the workstation, 1GB, is the reason that the app won't run. If this is the case, is there anyway around this problem?

Any insight you can provide will be greatly appreciated!

Hi ClementsK

As a "mature" user of several versions of Fox & VisFox, I personally have never heard of "Having too much memory". Sorry if its vague, but there may well be another problem. What version are you using?

Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much

What version of VFP?

Some earlier versions had limits. 5.0, I think, wouldn't run if more than 512MB was present.

Also don't forget, what OS are you using. If you are using Win9X, this OS could make such error.

Look at this FAQ: faq615-2438

ClementsK,

I have never heard of a VFP application failing to run because of too much memory, but I have seen cases where performance suffers when memory is added. I know it sounds perverse .... Not that it solves your problem, of course.

Also, it is well known that old FPW apps might not run on fast processors, but that's another story.

If you get any definitive information on this, be sure to post it here.

I found out a little bit more about the app...

The app was developed in Visual FoxPro 3.0a and the OS is Windows XP.

VFP 3.0a is very buggy and not to smart with handling memory.
You'd better rewrite/recompile in at least vfp6.

Rob.

VFP 3.0 has a limitation of 512 MB, and 3.0b has a limitation of 768 MB of RAM. See - "FIX: Insufficient Memory on a Computer That Has 512MB of RAM" for more info.

Note: Since it's unlikely you'll find an copy of 3.0b, upgrading to ANY other version of VFP will eliminate this problem. VFP 8.0 is the current release and it's much more stable than 3.0 and it has many improvements - especially for the developer.
