I have a dell R710 server running windows 2012 with 64Gb ram with wsus installed and running on wid, it also has avg admin console with a small firebird database. Would it be to much to add the domain controller role? I need a backup DC and wish to install the role on this box.

Should handle your scenario just fine, have multiple DC servers with similar setups. Unless you have a very large number of users, AD, properly setup does not tax a server very much. Most important part is to keep the server clean of unnecessary software, avoid Internet cruising, and have a decent AV running.
