Sorry - title wasn't very self-explanatory. I've created a menu system based upon the excellent NS6 and IE5.5 nav bar from brainjar. It looks fine on my browser but my mate, who has the same (IE 5.5), says he sees the following:

"click on space to left of all buttons and roll over - I see squares appear around the titles. Click on home and extra home lozenge appears below home and when u rollover other buttons menu items appear......click on one button and rollover state of all buttons change- to show sub menus"

Obviously I can't check this since he has the same browser. If any of you have just a couple of minutes to take a look at I would be very grateful. Obviously if you have any suggestions that would be great.

Thank you for your time.

PS: I've posted this in the JS forum as well, just in case ;)

win98 ie5.0 check - everything's fine (looks like it works as it supposed to)
but some pple say (& i agree with them) that u cant make javascript menu ur main page's navigation system it have 2 be back-up only..
may be i am wrong, but i think, flash is more stable then dhtml (actually, i have dhtml menu ONLY on my site & now i i'm gonna do it in flash instead..)
regards, vic

helpmegod: with regards to the link it works fine for me in IE5.5 i cant find any of the bugs you mentioned.

vituz: you cant make javascript your main pages only navigation has 2 be back up only.

Ive just finished a multi-tier DHTML/Javascript menu system which is replacing a flash menu system currently inuse on a site. It was decided that the flash files are too heavy and the same could be achieved with DHTML with a lot quicker download times for the average user. Ive tested the system thoroughly and it appears to be working fine and is stable inboth IE and NS(for a change!).

I wonder if u could tell me why you agree with the above statement? for what reasons you feel a dhtml menu is inappropriate for a sites main navigation? Obviously this would be of great interest to me bearing in mind the project ive just completed. especially as its not scheduled to go live for a few weeks so thre is ample time for a rethink.

cheers

And keep this discussion in this thread because I too would like to know your justification. I like flash but JS is so much more 'clean'.

Thank you both, however, for testing it for me.

well, ok, lets get started:
first, there are some users that surf with javascript turned off (it is the main thing that makes me 2 take this point, but u can resolve this by simple redirection or index with <noscript> tag wich wuld say smth like &quot;sorry guyz, but u shuld enable javascript 2 c this site [or get newer brawser at last..]&quot;)
so, if thus surfer wuld somehow get access 2 ur site, what will be before his eyes? nothing but some content on ur home page? or some additional navigation? (like standart table with links in the bottom/top of the page)? if there is one, then i think that table is da main navigation, but not dhtml menu is backup (but pretty cool one)..
if u'll check out the site that i'm workin on, u'll c what i mean sayin that u cant make dhtml ur main navigation system
but notice that i've broken everything there yestoday 'coz i wanted 2 remove cachin at all & now the hole site is workin xtremelly slow..

then i'll tell u that it is very difficlt 2 make correct dhtml menu, i mean menu that will work in all supporting-layers-browsers (my menu works in ie4+, nn4x, may be in nn6, didnt checked, but hope so, HAVE NO IDEA about others..)
& let me ask u a question:
how much browsers do u kno wich support layers?
what about tables?
u c the difference?
the other thing is that newer ones r more popular for now.. but there is allways a chance that someone on older browser wuld get on ur dhtml page.. *what a mess..* he wuld say..

& btw, i cant tell u with 100% guarantee that any dhtml menu u'll find here on net wuld work correctly in all cases (buggs r everywhere!!!)

i cant tell that flash wuld do it better, 'coz i'm just gettin started with learnin flash..

well, have i made it clear??
regards, vic

I believe the percentage of ppl who have javascript disabled is the same as those who don't have the flash plugin.

I don't think either is a more technical advantage *DEPENDING ON THE AUTHOR*. You can pit a javascript guru against a flash/actionscript guru and I wouldn't feel comfortable on placing odds.

When it comes to browsers... is this anything really different than we've dealt with in the past? IE and NS support layers, they just have different tags, etc.

I don't think anyone is using Lynx anymore. ;)

hi guys,

just thought i'd ressurect this one as after much debating with the client the menu i made has finally gone live. It works well in ie4+ and ns4.x and ns6 so thats most people covered. It hasn't been tested in opera or mozilla so i dont know there....

at the time of the last post i wasn't sure what i thought about the flash/javascript debate but now im even less sure. I've been playing with flash a bit since then and well its fairly powerful and i often think some of the dhtml stuff ive done could have been easier in flash but then....im really undecided as u can see...

i agree with bra1niac its hard to choose but to the point if u r interested the menu is live at

just click on one of the yellow links on the left and it will take u to a page with my menu on the left. If anyone can break it id be interested....

cheers

rob

oh btw,

you need javascript enabled to see anything with this site as you'll so that kinda made it ok to do the menu in dhtml....

clients choice...not mine

:)
