Hi, I'm currently working on a HP-UX 10.20 system which is a Oracle Database Server. Well I have a problem with my HP-UX.

#The fork function failed. Too many processes already exist.

Any ideas about this message?

Do anybody have ideas on this kind of problem?

My database stopped....

It looks like Oracle is trying to kick off another process to handle a user request. The fork failed, so Oracle shut down the whole database because it found a problem. The reason the fork failed is because the server had hit it's maximum number of user processes that it was configured for.

You need to amend some kernel tunables. If you've never done this before, or have the slightest question about something, contact your HP/UX support vendor. If you compile the kernel incorrectly then you can stop the whole system from booting...

The tunables you need to amend are (and please check these before changing them), MAXUSERS, NPROC, and MAXUPROC. If I recall correctly, increasing MAXUSERS should result in the total amount of available system processes being increased, as this is based on the number of users.

There is a very friendly Kernel Tuning module in SAM that will let you change the values.

Hope this helps.
