TOO MANY FIELDS ERROR IN ACCESS TABLE

I am working in Access 2000. I know that tables have a limit of 255 fields. At one time during the development process, I tried to enter more fields than the maximum and I realized the limitations. Currently I only have 74 fields in my main table, but Access will not let me add any more fields. Even if I try to remove 1 of the 74, it won't let me replace it with a new field.

Is there an inherent bug with the number fields allowed per table? Is there any way to reset a counter? or some other mechanism that counts the number of fields per table. Before, I have worked around this problem by adding additional tables for the fields I need but it's becoming cumbersome.

Please let me know if you have any ideas. I'm near the end of this project and I would like to finish this week!!!

Thanks,
