toner out message

I have a hp 4100n printer. We recently changed the toner cart. and can not get the lcd display to stop reading "toner out". I
I used an non-HP cart. and changed the defaults for a non-hp cart. but still get "toner-out". Any suggestions for correcting this?

It may be a ckouple of things, but is most likely the chip on the cartridge. These use radio waves and tend to get shorted out, and then display that message. If you pry off the chip the printer will work but you will lose the toner low functions.
