Tomcat

I dont know if I am in the right place.

I want to install Tomcat, and turn my machine into a server. So people can put my address in and see webpages. I have this done on another machine using apache, php, perl, html. I want to convert all that to using servlets, java, jsp. I downloaded tomcat, and it fails to start. What else to I have to install? Do I need other components? Anyone I need help. Once I can get it all working and try a hello world program, then I can start writing. Thanks!
