i use extended desktop on my w7 laptop/sony tv setup.
i have set dpi to 200 so i can see text/content comfortably on tv from a distance. many programs do not display properly. sometimes i have to reset dpi and logoff to "safely use" such programs. in additions the desktop juggles/stacks icons.

experience/advice/tips to quickly switching dpi/resolution(limited by laptop)/desktop config

Have you tried with the native drivers for your video card? Most drivers come with a little system tray icon for fast access to resolution and dpi changes.

ATI's drivers usually offer such an option. NVidia seems to not do it any more, other than access to their Control Panel, which may or may not be what you are after.

You may need to install the driver package directly from the manufacturer, instead of letting Windows do it.

Additionally here are some suggested apps that may work for you.

Ignorance is not necessarily Bliss, case in point:
Unknown has caused an Unknown Error on Unknown and must be shutdown to prevent damage to Unknown.

hi v, thanks for links.

my dell vostro 1500 has an intel express chip,
with 1k by 800 max res.

it would nice if i could switch dpi without logging off as that would be a working compromise.

i may try some nircmd/utilities that allow immediate res changes. failing that i might trawl for better drivers.

When I adjusted DPI settings some web pages in IE failed to display properly in that some of the text was not aligned correctly with areas of the page that they should be contained inside of. I remember it was diagnosed as some sort of "scaling" problem.

One of the fixes was to set this Registry Key and value.

Add the UseHR registry entry:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main
UseHR= dword:00000001

Another key that might be of interest is

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\DWM
"UseDPIScaling"=dword:00000000

This is an XP thread but it mentions lots of other DPI Registry locations which might or might not be relevant.

Large Fonts in Registry: Where Exactly?

hi linney, thanks for reg refs,

i do find that some ff pages don't display well, but my bigger problem is seeing dialogue/action boxes in some apps.

i have made some progress for individual apps using the compatability trouble shooter. eg ccleaner/start menu 7.

some apps behave oddly after reboot/logoff,
the extended desktop resets some iconpositions not others.

generally

whilst w7 is superior to vista,
it still has loose edges that require work that large dpi demonstrates. rather than simply pointing out apps (including ms) will not display properly it should provide run time options to help overcome them.

web page design seems to me to be too monitor biased ignoring increased tv use.
