To write music programs-Visual Basic / C++ or what??

Hi: I am a recording musician and have music programs, but I would like to invent my own and make changes to the ones I already have. So, I need direction, I know nothing about programing at this point but I am going to learn. If you would be so kind to tell me what direction and what program I should start out with, I would appreciate it very much.

Well considering audio application (especially if recording AND Manipulating) , which can be data intensive, and works up your CPU a bit, I would have to lean toward C++ for more data intensive ability, but since you are abolsutly new to programming I would have to lean towards Visual Basic for ease.
