I have a DSL modem/router (all in one) connected to my home network. The router goes into a switch then out to 5 computers.I'd like to add a wireless LINKSYS router to the setup for a laptop.
question..do most people turnoff the DHCP & NAT of the DSL routers and let the wireless unit do the routing/wireless/switching etc, when these are added ? I would imagine that the LINKSYS wireless router would have more bells and whistles then my DSL modem has.

just curious.

thanks

If at all possible, turn off the router features of the DSL Modem and place it into "Bridge" mode.

Let the Linksys assign the DHCP and NAT IP assignments, and function as the Gateway for all clients both wired and wireless.

If you continue with the switch, the arrangment would be:

DSL modem (bridge mode) to Linksys WAN Port
Wired clients on regular Linksys LAN ports
Switch connected with straight-thru cable to Linksys Uplink port. (Do not use the LAN connection next to the Uplink connector on the Linksys)

what is the difference between the uplink port and any of the LAN ports? would it just be crossed over? (wiring)

thanks for input

Exactly, it is wired to allow straight-thru cables to connect devices requiring cross-over connections. It is there as a convenience, but be sure to respect the fact that it is shared with the port directly adjacent to it and both cannot be used at the same time.
