Does it serve any purpose to shut down an anti viruss application when running backups. Is it worth the trouble ?

Without a shadow of a doubt - YES. Not having anti-virus software running speeds up the backup process considerably - If speed it not an issue, leave it as is but keep in mind - Backups will run at half speed or less.

We are backing up mailservers and anti-virus slows down with about 1/8 of the normal speed.

I've also 1 issue with anti-virus. We are using symantec 8.0 and symantec exchange filter 3.0 (W2K server). The backup of the mail server (netbackup client) fails with "network time out". This because of unscannable files in exchange.
So i'm looking for a script to shut down services on a netbackup client untill we solve the exchange issue.

Just to let you know about this issue as well.
