Howdy folks,

I'm upgrading all the PCs in my 10-user network from Win2K to XP (sorry Vista!) and some of them will be getting AVGFree A/V. It updates every day, but by default, it recommends daily virus scanning. Isn't this overkill? We have a Gateway A/V and frankly I'm worried about all the thrashing a virus scan gives these aging hard drives. My wife's PC, with a 250 GB HDD, takes over (3) hours to complete a scan, this can't be good for the HDD's innards. All comments are welcomed.

The PC A/V is just to prevent folks bringing in viruses on flash drives, CD's etc. Thanks as always.

Once a week should be sufficient as you have a Gateway Anti-virus to protect your network. Never can be to careful about what people bring in, they should scan any drives before using data.

I just checked the AVG 8.0 scheduler, it is possible to schedule weekly scans instead of daily. I must have had a brain f@rt as I thought the only option was daily or none at all.

Since the updater runs daily, I'm not too concerned about brought-in stuff. It would be checked if they tried to copy to the machine.

==>"they should scan any drives before using data." While a noble thought, my users are dumb as a sack of hammers when it comes to PC stuff. I have "REBOOT" tatooed across my forehead and point to it to solve 99% of user problems [smile]

Thanks for your input Xit.

AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition is only available for single computer use for home and non commercial use.
If you have ten users, you need to buy a license, doncha think?

This is nothing more than a test. We have an open client license for McCrapfee A/V that came with our license to run it on our SonicWALL as gateway A/V, but when I profiled all the McAfee PCs using Belarc Advisor I found virus definitions on many PCs WAY out of date. We also have 5 licenses for Norton (my previous attempt to find a better client AV), but some of these PCs were even farther out of date. I'm hoping that the problem was caused by the older Win2K OS and how it interfaced with the AV products I've tried in the past.

My, how some folks automatically assume the worst in people. <sigh>
