MY
I'm doing backup/restore activities using tar command from hard disk to 8Gb tape.

The backup command spesified the absolute path.
How i can restore the files to the different path (directories).

:-( according to the man page it can't be done once the archive has been created using an absolute path...

What files do you need to restore? (system files?)

Is it possible to rename the original files and then restore the backups? (It technically possible, I'm asking if the files are in use all of the time and if you have enough space for the copies really)

thank you for the info..
i should backup my files using relative path next time.

It can be done.... YES I said it CAN be done. Lookup the man pages on a command called pax. It can restore files from either a cpio or tar archive AND.... allows you the flexibility to restore a tar archive that had been done with an absolute path name into a directory of your choice.

Have Fun!

Or... you can try mounting some file systems, resembling what you want to do...
