I am using AIX ver 4.3 in IBM RS-6000. I have partioned the disk in 4 compartments and in one of the compartments Oracle is loaded alongwith a database created for a project purpose. Now due to some gross error in judgement that compartment is full and oracle has stopped loading.

My question is whether the same partition can be marged with another partition having considerable space without any loss of data so that oracle gets sufficient space for it's instances to be started.

By compartment, do you mean "filesystem" ? If so, the other ones cannot me made smaller, by you can create an Oracle databse file in one of the other filesystems, then tell Oracle to use it.

This would pose a management nightmare for your DBA, but it would get Oracle back up.

Bill.

The answer to this depends on whether there is room in the volume group in which Oracle resides. This can be checked using:

lsvg <vg_name>

...where <vg_name> is the name of that volume group; look for FREE PPs and it will give you the amount of free space.

Provided you have space, use SMIT to increase the size of the filesystem.

Other options are to backup the large filesystem, remove it and recreate it smaller thereby freeing up space.

Hope it helps..?
