To NULL or NOT to NULL?

It has been a while since I set one up but for the FAASTRad suing a PC located in the phone room and DIRECT CONNECT, should I be using the following cable:

Null Modem DB9 serial cable MALE / FEMALE

I have a buncho fo these cables but none have any markings on them. Is there a way to test them?

Direct connect is null modem. You can use a breakout box or check continuity of pins 2 and 3. In a null cable they cross over.

Ok, that is hwat I thought but I had read posts that said they were using s straight through cable. I will see if I can find on. I seem to have a lot of staight throughs and Frys did not carry them in stock.

What is so odd is that there are no factory markins on the cable itslef to show if it is a NULL or STRAIGH THRU cable. How strange that the would be manufactured that way.
