To IP or Not to IP

when a client vistits your web site, by default, Apache will log the IP address of that requesting client. But you can have Apache log the host name of each client, rather than the IP address, how do you do that?

And will it slow down the Web server, since it will have to perform a lookup for each distinct visitor to the Web page?

 
The directive that you are looking for is HostNameLookups.
To activeate this directive, you need to put:

HostNameLookups on

in the httpd.conf file and then restart your server. Check out for more information on this and other directives.

Adding this directive does slow down the access to your web server since the server must do a reverse lookup.
