Hi-

Im at the stage in database design now where I am starting to look at optimising the db for best performance. Having ported the database from Access using the Datadump utility, I have to decide whether its worth converting the VARCHAR fields to CHAR.

Reading this article made me think that as far as the network goes - there is not much in it :

Anyone have any thoughts on this ?

Cheers..

If the fields are more or less of the same length, like phone numbers or social security number, use the char variable, in case of names or similar fields, use the varchar variable Steven van Els
